Genesis Owusu, Angélica Garcia, JOHN and Moriaty announced in line-up reveal for IDLES Cornish tour date at The Wyldes
IDLES will be joined by Genesis Owusu, Angélica Garcia, JOHN and Moriaty at their Cornish tour date at The Wyldes this July.
Following the chart-topping success of their fifth studio album TANGK, released earlier this year, and having received rapturous audiences and stellar reviews from their latest performances on the tour, IDLES have announced their supporting artists including genre-bending Genesis Owusu and experimental Angélica Garcia for several dates on the tour, including North Cornish outdoor venue The Wyldes.
Sweeping up awards including Album of the Year, Best Independent Release and Best Hip Hop / Rap Release at the 2023 ARIA Awards, and dominating nominations in the year of its release, Genesis Owusu’s second studio album STRUGGLER surpassed the success of even his first studio album Smiling With No Teeth, which met similar acclaim when he burst onto the scene with its release in 2021. With lyrics steeped in metaphor, Owusu is inspired by the stubborn human will to survive, remarking “Through pandemics, bushfires and wars, we’re still going to find a way to make it to tomorrow, and I think that’s beautiful”. Owosu has toured around the world to sold-out legendary venues, and has toured alongside modern indie greats including Paramore, Bloc Party, and Tame Impala, now joining IDLES on their world tour.
Angélica Garcia blends styles seamlessly in a way that’s entirely her own, switching between the textured polyrhythms of Latin America, vocal production inspired by ambient electronica, and the edgier sparks of noise pop. Having just released four tracks from her upcoming album Gemelo, including singles Color De Dolor and Juanita, Garcia explores the process of grieving, explaining “Grief is nuanced, and sometimes pain can be intertwined with beauty,” in her first album sung entirely in Spanish, with the experimental yet carefully constructed vocal production style seen in her previous work.
In a return to The Wyldes, festival favourites JOHN join the line-up in July. Achieving mounting critical success with their independently released albums and singles including ‘Trauma Mosaic’ and ‘Theme New Bond Junior’, JOHN blend punk attitude with clashing drum rhythms and rock guitar melodies, culminating in a style that translates perfectly into their live performances, which The Guardian described as ‘ferocious’ in their review marking the band as ones to watch.
Locally renowned blues-rock two-piece Moriaty will open the stage for IDLES Cornwall gig. Having worked with and performed alongside IDLES at The Wyldes’ flagship former festival Leopallooza, Moriaty are old-hands at performing to the venue’s lively audiences. With heavy basslines and bluesy riffs, slick drum beats and drawling vocals, Moriaty claim the stage with a live performance that’s every bit as energizing as their records promise.
From a burning car bonfire tradition to the festoon-lit forest surrounding their main stages, Cornish venue The Wyldes (former home and founders of locally-cherished independent festival Leopallooza) rebels against what’s expected for concert venues. The Wyldes offers atmosphere and value for money, curating several hours of entertainment, providing street food vendors and fairly priced bars, and there’s even an afterparty included in the ticket for those who don’t want the night to end. Paying homage to the venue’s homespun origins, events at The Wyldes have a rustic, intimate feel that will appeal to the hardy festival-goer and the festival first-timer alike. Ticket buyers also have an array of camping areas to choose from, from simple-yet-spacious tent camping to glamping in bell tents with all the mod-cons of a boutique hotel.
Tickets are still available for IDLES live in The Wyldes, but are selling fast, with many of IDLES’ other dates on the tour having already sold out.
The Wyldes said ‘IDLES’ pairing with Genesis Owusu, Angélica Garcia, JOHN and Moriaty is really interesting – all five artists pack deep meaning and individuality into their work, they don’t let genres define them, which is amazing to see in the music industry. This show is set to be mind-blowing, and we’re so ready for it.”
IDLES will perform live in The Wyldes, Cornwall on Sunday 21 July, 2024.
