The Mare & Foal Sanctuary Events

What is The Mare and Foal Sanctuary?

Founded in 1988 by Rosemary Kind, we have rescued, rehabilitated and trained more than a thousand horses, ponies and foals in critical need. Around 600 remain in our care today.

We provide human-equine interaction through equine assisted learning and equine assisted activities with our rescued horses and ponies to children, young people and adults in our community. As a respected provider of Equine Assisted Services, we are a member of the Human Equine Interaction Register.

Thanks to the kindness of our supporters and visitors we can continue our lifesaving work.

Where is The Mare and Foal Sanctuary?
Our horses and ponies live at four sanctuary sites near Newton Abbot, Totnes, Yelverton and Holsworthy. Hundreds of Sanctuary at Home carers across the Southwest also rehome our equines on loan.

Most of our visitor events happen at Coombe Park Education and Equestrian Centre, Totnes and most are completely free to attend.

What can I see when I come?
We offer a year-long programme of family-friendly open days, tea and stable tours, seasonal fairs, exhibitions, rehoming events, tack sales, equine demonstrations and talks.

It’s very likely you’ll meet your new best friend at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary.

Perhaps it’ll be one of our sponsorship ponies: spirited miniature Shetland Sir Didymus or his field-mate friends Ludo, Morgan and Mousey Prince? Maybe brave Geronimo the one-eyed moorland pony, beautiful grey mare Vogue or fun-loving Morgan horse Tammy?

You’ll learn about our work rescuing and caring for ponies and enjoy a fun day exploring our peaceful sanctuary and meeting its residents. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
