Kiefer Sutherland’s Band. Exeter Live Review May 23rd 2006

Kiefer Sutherland’s performance at the Exeter Phoenix was a reminder that his second life as a musician isn’t a celebrity vanity project but a genuinely compelling artistic chapter. The concise takeaway: he delivered a warm, intimate, story driven set that blended Americana grit with actorly charisma, turning the Phoenix into something that felt closer to a Nashville listening room than a Devon arts venue.

Sutherland arrived with the confidence of someone who has lived several lives and has the stories to prove it. His voice husky, lived in, unmistakably his carried beautifully in the Phoenix’s tight acoustics. Songs like “Not Enough Whiskey” and “Reckless & Me” landed with emotional weight, while newer material showed a more reflective, almost tender side. What stood out was his pacing, he balanced driving, roots rock energy with quieter storytelling moments that drew the room in.

Sutherland’s between song anecdotes were a highlight. He spoke about life on the road, personal missteps, and the strange duality of being both a Hollywood icon and a touring musician. These weren’t polished monologues they felt spontaneous, funny, and disarmingly honest. It’s here that his acting background helped: he knows how to hold a room, how to build tension, how to land a line.
His band was tight, versatile, and clearly comfortable shifting between country rock swagger and more introspective arrangements. The Phoenix’s sound engineering deserves credit too: guitars were crisp, vocals sat forward, and nothing felt over amplified. It was a show built for connection rather than spectacle.

This was a gig that surprised even those who arrived curious rather than convinced. Sutherland isn’t trading on fame he’s earning his applause. Exeter Phoenix proved the perfect venue for a night that felt personal, heartfelt, and musically assured.

A brilliant evening and I would highly recommend seeing Kiefer live, everyone left with a smile and a great vibe, after all, that’s just what live music is about, for more dates and info on his music , here is the link to Kiefer’s official site.
